History is defined as "An account of facts", that branch of knowledge which deals with past events. Clinton Mayes and William McLean made history by becoming the first African American Police Officers in Kane County with their respective departments. Our scholarship has been named in their honor. Clinton Mayes joined the Aurora Police Department in 1964. William McLean joined the Kane County Sheriff's Office in the late 1960's.
Not all historical facts are documented or easily found. If you were at our 2001 event then you had the opportunity to meet several pioneers. Andrew Hamilton, the first Countywide Juvenile Officer, F. Keith Brown, Judge, Scheketa Hart-Burns, City of Aurora Alderwoman and David Moore, Coroner. These are the first African Americans to hold these positions in Kane County.
